The GIF is a 2-color (black-on-white) 640 X 400 schematic diagram of the XE1541 cable, developed by Nicolas Welte and Wolfgang Moser. Under the category of "Who cares?", this GIF was produced entirely on a C-64. Four Doodle images were created, and loaded into different areas of memory. Then a simple BASIC program read memory, and wrote a BMP disk file. The Windows BMP format is quite straightforward, except that (unlike most other image formats) the data start with the information at the BOTTOM of the screen. Finally, "BMP2GIF.SDA" (it's been in comp.binaries.cbm) was used to produce the GIF. The XE1541 cable should work with ALL PC printer ports. But please note that the XE1541 cable is NOT a substitute for the X1541 cable; software written for X1541 will not work with XE1541. But "Star Commander" (and possibly other PC software) supports XE1541. Using v0.81 of SC, run "SCSETUP" and do an F4. Then select "Serial" and "Extended cable".
